TORRINGTON—A local 10-year-old, Samantha Hall, is in stage five organ failure, in need of a new kidney.
Samantha Hall is a sweet 10 year old girl. She was diagnosed with a very rare kidney disease in April 2013 just around her birthday. At that time her kidney's were functioning at 70%. At this point in time they are only functioning at 8%. Both of her kidneys are diseased, and she is in need of a new kidney to survive. Her doctors are hoping to find her a "live" organ donor to proceed with a transplant in February 2014.

Homeless Shelter Program:
Needs Volunteers!
Operation Overflow is an overflow shelter with 12 beds to handle those homeless during the cold winter months. The program runs from Dec. 2 to April 5.
The emergency shelter program can be found at Trinity Church, located at 220 Prospect St., for six weeks, then moves to Center Congregational Church at 155 Main St. for four weeks and then on to United Methodist Church, located at 21 Fern Dr. for six weeks before finishing off with another four weeks at Trinity Church.
“We have a new director - Rick Dalla Valle,” said Lisa Hageman, director of the Community Soup Kitchen. “We have about 100 volunteers lined up already but we need about 350 volunteers.”
The program operates with two volunteers, one male and one female, monitoring the shelter and being available in case of emergency at a given time. A coordinator checks in the people staying at the shelter.
“The shelter is a safehaven so we breathalyze, we check belongings, taking away any sharp objects, potential weapons. We also do background checks,” said Hageman. “Certain people are not allowed - arsonists, people convicted of domestic violence, assault, sex offenders.”
Hageman says a person can volunteer for just one night, or one night a month. There is a 20-minute training session. Any person interested in volunteering can contact Lisa Hageman.

OxyElite Pro Supplements Recalled
11/18/2013 01:00 PM EST
FDA used new enforcement tools provided by the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act to act quickly in the face of a potential danger to public health. Following FDA actions, USPLabs on Nov. 9, 2013 recalled certain OxyElite Pro dietary supplements linked to dozens of cases of acute liver failure and hepatitis, including one death and illnesses so severe that several patients required liver transplants. Additionally, FDA will oversee the destruction of warehouse stocks of the supplement, with a retail value of about $22 million. While FDA's investigation is still ongoing, the agency continues to warn consumers to avoid using OxyElite Pro and VERSA-1. Both products contain a new dietary ingredient for which the company did not provide evidence of safety.
